Forget purity. Mixed cultural mashups are the Miami way. Take for example Friday's SOULé evening. The performance begins with a pinch of flamenco music -- in this case flamenco fusion from the band Gypsy Cat -- and then adds in some R&B, American folkloric roots music, and contemporary dance. The result: a show featuring a modern Miami sound. This ain't your Spanish grandmother's flamenco or your dad's soul tunes. Featuring the Aire Dance Company, SOULé incorporates other elements, such as performance artist and dancer Pioneer Winter, spoken-word artist Marie Whitman, guitarist Carl Ferrari (who is also the event's musical director), and the choreography of artistic director Ana Miranda. All in all, the eclectic night will feature 15 international dancers and musicians who explore the crossroads among these varied influences and traditions. Presented by the nonprofit Art Works for Us, SOULé begins at 8 p.m. at On Stage Black Box at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium (2901 W. Flagler St., Miami). Tickets cost $25. Call 305-547-5414 or visit ticketmaster.com or artworksforus.org.
Fri., Aug. 17, 8 p.m., 2012
