From Ed Ruscha's swimming pools to Jose Yalenti's undulating building, a stunning collection of images at CiFo Art Space evoke a deeper reflection on the nature of pictures.
"Inside Out, Photography After Form" boasts over 90 photographs from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, and marks the first time in recent years the space has devoted an entire show to the art form. Curated by Simon Baker and Tanya Barson of London's Tate Modern, the sprawling exhibit includes works by Uta Barth, Thomaz Farkas, Germán Lorca, Gabriel Orozco, Man Ray, Thomas Struth, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Fiona Tan, and dozens others.
On view a 1939 black-and-white gelatin silver print by Leo Matiz, depicting a man on a skiff tossing a cast net fanned out like a peacock's tail, contrasts sharply with Edward Burtynsky's 2005 fish eye-snap of a freighter's sardine scale-blue prow jutting at the viewer from a Chinese shipyard.
The exhibit, which also features some of CiFo's newer acquisitions, explores the relationship between the camera lens and the construction, production and deconstruction of images and organized around sections plunging into manifestations of "form, space and formlessness."
