Make a Splash
“Humans belong on land,” they said. “You can’t survive under water,” they claimed. “Mermaids don’t exist,” they insisted.
Well, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science (3280 S. Miami Ave., Miami) might have something different to say about that. OK, not about the mermaids. But for the third year in a row, the museum is hosting the Miami Underwater Festival, proving that although evolution has denied humans the benefits of functional gills, it makes up for it in our innate ability to do cool stuff below the surface.
eginning Saturday, the programming offers events such as underwater films and photography, aquariums of all sizes, a virtual tour of Florida International University’s underwater laboratory, scavenger hunts, and even something as silly as a photo op with a giant shark balloon. Those are simply a few of the events going on during the two-day festival. Best of all for the many people interested in all things aquatic is that, with the exception of paid museum admission Saturday, all of these special events are free of charge.
