Love and Loss
So you want to see all the Best Picture Oscar nominees this year? Most of the films are still playing in cineplexes across town. But others — the low-budget, the indie, the foreign — are harder to come by. So you’d better head to Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) to catch Amour, the sole French film up for the big prize this year.
Amour tells the story of Anne and George, an aging couple of former music teachers. When Anne’s health begins failing, George must confront some difficult choices. A feel-good flick this is not. What else did you expect from France?
If you come away from the film concerned about your own mortality, however, just remember that Emmanuelle Riva, the 85-year-old actress who plays Anne, is the oldest Best Actress Oscar nominee in history. Her character may be leaning toward death, but Riva seems to be just hitting her stride.
