Last Chance to Dance
Part Amélie, part days of yore, Spiegelworlds traveling stage really attains its proposed feeling: a Euro art nouveau circus. But anyone who has stepped inside this temporal beach attraction on a recent Sunday evening has found it also induces fantasies of the Cuban variety. The moon projects a dim haze through the colored glass inlaid in the stately wooden theater, and drummers keep tropical time with harmonious voices in an experience that transports you right into the glorious soul of old Havana. Tonight is your last chance to catch the dreamy sequence of the Global Cuba Fest, which has included everything from experimental Latin jazz to world-beat filin and nueva trova.
The program, sponsored by FUNDarte and Miami Light Project, rumbas the collapsible structure right into the sand via some musical acrobatics a lo circo de sol Cubano. Cuban musician and dancer Philbert Armenteros and his populous Los Herederos collective explode onto the stage with Afro-Cuban drumming, chanting, and chorus lines in a rootsy mix of rumba, guaguanco, and timba; then Grammy nominee Tiempo Libre keeps the spirit pumping with its own high-voltage timba and jazz. The fiesta begins at 5 p.m. at the traveling Spiegeltent housed at Collins Park. Visit www.fundarte.us for purchasing information.
