Since Art Basel Miami Beach launched in 2002, the Magic City art scene has exploded. There’s a Cuban art scene in Little Havana and an artistic renaissance in Coconut Grove. But just north of downtown, local art and culture have been steadily pushed aside by dealers and hipsters flocking to the Design District. Beginning this Friday, one community often overlooked will remind newcomers that art and culture have been alive and well here since long before the first gallery opened. Big Night in Little Haiti kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, exhibiting a tour de force of Haitian dance and music by Rara Kuyu and Universal Soul Arts, as well as Jean P Jam. Outside, check out what the neighborhood’s been cooking up under the commercial radar. The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance (225 NE 59th St., Miami) will show the exhibit “Global Caribbean II,” featuring the open studios of sculptor Edouard Duval-Carrié and photographer Carl Juste. Sweat Records (5505 NE Second Ave., Miami) will put on a free “Best of Sweat” variety show, including Casa de Haha and Pure Imagination live. Check out 7 Circuit Studios (228 NE 59th St., Miami) for an open gallery and concerts by the Nag Champayons and Moksha All Stars.
