Kickin' It with Dad
Every year when Father's Day rolls around, the family treks out to the mall to buy the requisite gift: a high-tech gadget, a new watch or wallet, a pair of silky socks, or something with "#1 Dad" proudly emblazoned on it. Fathers get the same boring presents because they never complain. Well, Chris Rock was right: Your dad deserves a whole lot more than just the big piece of chicken at the dinner table. This year take the man out and show him a good time. There's a special Father's Day event for every kind of dad.
Can your father discuss the finer points of using fresh herbs in his cooking? Bring Chef Dad to the Real Men Cook event. Kofi and Yvette Moyo whipped up this annual celebration sixteen years ago, and it has blossomed into one of the largest national Father's Day events. Expect inventive Floridian cuisine like "saltwater pork chops," which are actually shark fillets; delicious Puerto Rican mofongo; and North Carolina-style barbecue chicken wings. It all goes down Sunday, June 19, at 3:00 p.m. at the Culture Complex (217 NW 36th St., Miami). Tickets cost $20 for adults; $10 for children. Call 305-576-2429, or visit www.realmencook.com.
Adventurer Dad would be happier setting up a tent in a mosquito-infested campground than he would wearing that lame tie you were thinking of buying him. On Saturday, June 18, take him on the Historical Museum Father's Day Stiltsville and Key Biscayne Boat Tour. This stubborn, delicate community is surrounded by the turquoise waters of Biscayne National Park. The boat leaves at 10:00 a.m. from 401 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Admission is $39. Call 305-375-1621, or visit www.historical-museum.org for reservations.
Classy Dad likes nothing better than to sit back with a snifter of cognac and a pricey cigar. Bring him to the BBQ & Benz Bash Saturday, June 18, at 5:00 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne (455 Grand Bay Dr., Key Biscayne) for a cooking lesson from the hotel's incredible culinary team, Bacardi cocktails, an exclusive viewing of the newest Mercedes-Benz rides, and of course a lavish feast complete with buckets of beer and live music. Tickets cost $50 for adults; $20 for children. Call 305-365-4500, or visit www.ritzcarlton.com.
Sexy Dad keeps his hair slick and dresses in designer threads. Take him to the launch of the new C-IN2 underwear line, where he can groove to tunes from a hip DJ and score a free pair of boxers simply by posing with a C-IN2 model. The man parade will be Saturday, June 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Bloomingdale's Aventura (19555 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura) and at Bloomingdale's Miami, The Falls (8778 SW 136th St., Miami). Call 305-252-6234, or visit www.bloomingdales.com.
Hungry Dad prefers all-you-can-eat places, where he can indulge his inner glutton. Take him to North 110 (11052 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) Sunday, June 19. The Father's Day menu includes bloody mary ceviche, yuca-crusted snapper, and spicy mothers-in-law eggs from hell. For $35 you can feast while sipping a complimentary mango mimosa. And every dad gets a bottle of Sanso olive oil, chef Dewey LoSasso's personal favorite. Call 305-893-4211.
