If you value your lazy days spent relaxing at the beach, then it wouldnt be a bad idea to pitch in and help clean up some of Miamis own natural wonders. By participating in the International Coastal Cleanup Day through a few hours of volunteering, you can aid in the removal of shoreline debris and increase the current collective gathering of 100 million pounds. The Cleanup is a chance for people to do something positive for the marine environment, says Vickie Matter, director of the International Coastal Cleanup for the Ocean Conservancy. The real Cleanup ethic doesnt just last a single day.... [It] is making sure people act responsibly year-round. Organizers of the event, sponsored locally by the environmental nonprofit ECOMB, ask that volunteers meet at Island View Park at 8:30 a.m. for registration; from 9:00 a.m. to noon everyone will scour the shore around the park and Monument Island. Visit www.ecomb.org to register early.
