We’ve always felt a certain bond with Elizabeth Gilbert. Hey, like everyone else, we kicked back with Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. And what do you know? Gilbert gets all that eating, praying, and loving stuff.
But here’s the thing: Even though that book spent about four years on the New York Times bestseller list, it’s nowhere near as interesting as the rest of her work. Her National Book Award finalist biography, The Last American Man, is both a blast of an adventure story as well as a nuanced examination of modern masculinity. Her short stories in Pilgrims have outlasted their hype to remain one of the late 20th Century’s great collections. And her novel Stern Men is probably one of the funniest books about a teenaged female lobsterman. All of this is why we’re excited about her appearance at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus Auditorium (300 NE Second Ave., Miami) in support of her first book-length fiction in 13 years, The Signature of All Things.
The new book is a generations- and globe-spanning yarn that has the epic scope of 19th-century classics but with the knowing language and politics of the 21st Century. It’s the Brontës’ territory spun with the contemporary styling of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. Though it might superficially feel like a hard right turn from the ashram, Signature follows the progression the rest of her bibliography suggests.
To get a ticket, you’ll need to buy a copy of the new book ($28.95 plus tax) at a Books & Books location, at booksandbooks.com, or by calling 305-442-4408. With the book, you’ll get entry for two people to the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. on the second floor of MDC’s Building 1. After you finish the new one, if you still miss the old book, feel free to eat this one, pray that it passes through you smoothly, and then love your medicated wipes when it doesn’t.
