When jazz trumpet player Melton Mustafa blows his horn, people listen -- on local and national levels. One of Miami's favorite musicians, Mustafa for the last 8 years has even run his own jazzy celebration that attracts some of the biggest names in the biz. This year's Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival concert will feature Mustafa himself, several student bands, and luminaries like trumpeters Clark Terry and Jon Faddis, pianist Billy Taylor, drummer Winard Harper, and saxophonist Benny Golson. Before the big show, however, a series of master classes/workshops will be given for students, or anyone who thinks he or she has potential to shine in the musical spotlight. In what might be an American Idol-style twist, industry folk will share their expertise. The concert is at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow; workshops go from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. tomorrow at Florida Memorial College, A. Hello, young lovers. Or maybe not in the case of the Florida Grand Opera's production of Charles Gounod's Romeo & Juliette. According to Shakespeare's more than 400-year-old tragedy on which the opera is based, Juliet was about 13 years old, Romeo a little older at 16. But would you want to listen to a bunch of kids wailing as if they're in the Broadway version of Annie? Literary authenticity only stretches so far. The stars of the FGO production (above), opening tonight, are, shall we say, a bit more mature. Singing in French with projected English subtitles will be Mexican tenor Fernando de la Mora as Romeo and French soprano Elizabeth Vidal as Juliette. Opera singers seem to be notorious for keeping their age under wraps. Guess in the classical music world, love means never having to say you're 40. The New World Symphony is taking its show on the road. Not to Broward -- to Italy and the prestigious National Academy of Saint Cecilia for a 7-day residency and 2 performances. But instead of dashing to Rome, you can enjoy a preview of the program, dubbed The Diverse 20th Century, closer to home. And talk about diversity: The concert includes the works of composers Steve Reich, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, and Maurice Ravel.
