Hold the Pretense
Art Basel Miami Beach stormed into town in 2002 and boosted the Magic Citys art prominence and prestige like nothing before. But when it comes to longevity, Basel is still the South Miami Art Festivals bitch. Thats right we said it. Celebrating its 39th year, the fest might not have the panache or stateliness (or legitimacy) of ABMB, but it avoids the pretense. Looking for an avant-garde work to go with your collection of Picassos? Check out Basel. Want a nice piece to display in your living room? South Miami Art Festival is your winning ticket. And you can cast aside any concerns that the putrid economy will put the kibosh on the quality of the event, says Mary Scott Russell, president of Chamber South, the fests main sponsor. We have more artists this year than last. And more new artists, she adds. The South Miami Art Festival is a juried, fine art show consistently ranked in the top 100 in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The show features paintings, mixed media, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, metalwork, and jewelry.
