History in Motion
Indian dancer Protima Gauri dreamed of creating a dance community where dancers drop negative qualities such as jealousy, small-mindedness, greed, and malice to embrace their colleagues as sisters and support each other in their journey towards becoming dancers of merit. That village, known as Nrityagram, exists in Southern India and can be credited for keeping ancient dance traditions including Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam, and Odissi alive. This weekend Miami Dade College presents the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble to close the fifteenth-anniversary season of its Cultura del Lobo performance series. The group of ten musicians and dancers will perform Sacred Space, featuring the sensuous and fluid motions of Odissi, Indias oldest classical dance. Visit www.nrityagram.org to learn more about the enchanting dance troupe.
