Heros to Zeros

What’s better than diverse and subversive stage readings presented by young, hungry, and driven actors? Nothing, except when those stage readings also include music, audience interaction, and cheap admission. Ground Up & Rising, the award-winning theater and film organization, is doing just that for its fall season with the reading series Zero Point. This Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. at GableStage, actor Curtis Belz will mash Manhattan Boricua, Brooklyn Polish, Bronx Dominican, and Jamaican patois together for a blend of New York monologues from Danny Hoch’s Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop. There’s a wheelchair-bound kid with a crack-smoking mom, a white kid who wants to be a gangsta rapper, and a cop who can’t figure out the race of a hot-dog vender. Presented with no lights and no set, the minimalist Zero Project series moves the focus back on the performance.
Mon., Sept. 26, 8 p.m.; Tue., Sept. 27, 8 p.m., 2011
