Haters Gonna Hate
Last year, the Orange Bowl hosted the BCS Championship college football game, in which Alabama murdered Notre Dame. Exciting? Not really. And to Miamians, the game meant nothing except another opportunity to joke about Manti Te’o’s fake girlfriend.
This year, the Orange Bowl, which will be played at Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens), features a matchup between the Clemson Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes, a step up for local fans, who are familiar with Clemson as an ACC rival. Ohio State, on the other hand, earned its fame this year by nearly achieving a perfect season — until the final game of the year, in which Michigan State ruined Ohio’s chances of playing in the national championship this year.
Only the most hard-core football fans are interested in witnessing the likes of Taj Boyd or Braxton Miller; if you’re not a Miami transplant from North Carolina or Ohio, this game likely won’t mean much to you. But many UM fans still harbor a deep-seated hatred of Ohio State and its head coach, Urban Meyer, stemming from the national championship that was robbed from the Miami Hurricanes in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. So this Friday’s game is a chance to dig deep into your resentment. Consider it “hate cheering.”
