We admit it were always a little skeptical when the Internet gets abuzz about some hot new indie rock band out of Florida. Not skeptical because of the pool of talent our state has to offer, but because weve noticed a trend of bands getting attention, dropping one EP, and then sadly going nowhere except your local Dairy Queen. Which is why our fingers and toes are crossed for the Black Kids, straight outta Jacksonville.
The name isnt a deliberately controversial misnomer, à la Nineties all-Caucasian rap group Young Black Teenagers; this band is actually ethnically diverse, and its New Wave-influenced music paints a bold soundscape with layered Cure-esque vocals, swirling synths, and shout-along choruses thatll most def-rock the crowd at Circa28. I love bringing new, exciting bands here. Especially to have a band from Florida come here -- its great to throw the party. Having it at Circa is even cooler, raves copresenter Lolo of Sweat Records. Itll be rockin tonight at 10 for patrons ages 21 and older. Visit www.myspace.com/circasaturdays for show info, and definitely check out www.myspace.com/blackkidsrock to download fresh music from the next big thing.
