Hip-hop permeates all cultural boundaries. It cannot be confined to clubland or radio play. It lives in movies and television. It grinds with strippers and revs up motorcycles. Super-sized hip-hop egos are scheduled to make appearances all over the Miami party map this Memorial Day. The glittering posse and its fans hit the court at the Miami Arena (721 NW First Ave.) with the Source Magazine Celebrity Basketball Tournament. Since everybody in planet hip-hop is expected in town this weekend, chances are you'll see some credible stars sweating, dribbling, and dunking. According to the official roster, megawatt recording artists Ja Rule, Trick Daddy, and Ashanti will be facing off. We look forward to watching what happens when Fat Joe takes on local girl Trina. Could we say Trina pancake? Let's hope not.
Whatever the result, you'll get a chance to see your favorite personalities sweating for real on the court. Of course there will be ample Cristal and Hpnotiq on hand. Hell, once it becomes apparent that none of these folk can shoot worth squat, it just may turn into a hell of a party.
The game starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range from $11.50 to $76.50. Call 305-530-4400. --By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
Hikers hail Florida trail
Rigging elections, drug running, immigrant smuggling, girls going wild, and citrus canker. If you could take one step for all the freaky or illegal stuff that happens in Florida, you'd probably hike a trail from Miami to Pensacola. The members of the Big Cypress Chapter of the Florida Trail Association organize each month to help maintain the Florida Trail, a sprawling walk that starts on Route 41, behind the Oasis Ranger Station, and stretches to the Florida Panhandle. The association is connecting the walkway to the Appalachian Trail. The group meets third Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at Palmetto High School, 7400 SW 118th St., room 900.
