Shorts: They’re not just for old guys in tube socks and sandals anymore. This Friday, City Theatre’s Summer Shorts festival returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) for its 17th time, bringing with it ten short plays designed to zest up the typical theater scene with laughs galore. “I don’t believe the theater should only be for theater people. We’re working with some of the best comedy writers from theater and television to put together a fun night that will appeal to anyone,” says John Manzelli, codirector of this year’s Summer Shorts. To that end, this year the festival has commissioned directors such as John Manzelli — who’s racked up fame points both in front of and behind the camera by serving as City Theatre’s artistic director in its previous season and playing Sol Drucker on the Starz series Magic City — and GableStage alum and NBC Universal writer Mark Swaner. They’ll be working with the likes of Todd Allen Durkin — another Magic City star who’s also a Carbonell Award winner and was named New Times’ Best Actor in 2010 — and 11-time Carbonell winner Irene Adjan. The combination promises another uplifting and hilarious addition to the Arsht’s Summer Shorts legacy. The festival runs through June 17. Tickets cost $35. Call 305-949-6722 or visit arshtcenter.org.
