George Lopez Is Old

Once upon a time, George Lopez became America’s favorite Latino voice. Like other Hispanic comedians such as Paul Rodriguez and Carlos Mencia, Lopez based his comedy on all the odd, quirky things that Latinos do. He poked fun at his own people with enough care that they weren’t offended but with enough of a twist that gringos found it hilarious. Lopez’s success culminated in his ABC show, George Lopez, which lasted five seasons, even making it to syndication. It eventually led to a short-run late-night talk show on TBS in 2009, until he was unceremoniously dropped for Conan O’Brien. But Lopez’s newly released book, I’m Not Gonna Lie: And Other Lies You Tell When You Turn 50, isn’t necessarily about his successes. It’s more about how a C-list celebrity finds himself at the age of 50 — and shocker, he’s old. Lopez gripes about having to cover mirrors, divorcing his wife of more than 20 years to date much younger women, and dealing with other midlife crises.
