The lore around 130-pound, Cuban-born pugilist Joel Casamayor, above, can be seen as allegorical for Cuban Americans. After Casamayor won the gold medal in the 1992 Olympics, Fidel Castro presented the worlds best bantamweight amateur boxer with a bicycle. Casamayor is said to have sold the bicycle to buy a pig so he could feed his family. Pegged as the favorite to win the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the Cuban boxer defected, saying: You cant eat gold medals.
Now boxing professionally at a healthy 130 pounds, 32-year-old Casamayor is battling to win back his world title in the lightweight division. Hell be facing off against the unbeaten Daniel Seda, a persistent and tough contender who hails from Puerto Rico.
We can already hear the crowds cheering for the Cuban and the boricua, respectively. Also fighting in a hard-punching heavyweight showdown will be undefeated Cuban-born Eliseo Castillo versus the two-time champion Michael Moorer of Pennsylvania by way of Brooklyn, New York.
Be on the lookout for rapper Fat Joe, whose favorite boxer, Allen Conyers, will be on the card. To add some spice to the event, Tito Puente, Jr., will perform.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd. Tickets range from $25 to $250. Call 786-777-1000.
Outdoor fun for all
It is summer and the children are finally away at camp. Now its your turn to sit by the fire, roast weenies and marshmallows, strum the guitar, and sing Kum Ba Ya at the Larry and Penny Thompson Campgrounds (12451 SW 184th St.) two-night camp-out. Check in tonight and sack out in your tent or -- no, dont do it! -- your RV (full hookups are available). On Saturday, hang out at the campgrounds beach and water slide (only in Miami!), take part in an open-mike hour, then enjoy a free folk concert of local acts. End the evening around -- yes! -- a campfire song circle. Camping costs $10 for tents and $22 for RVs. Call 305-232-1049. - Nina Korman
