Freaks, Geeks, and Gays
It's been a really good year for misfit teens. Everyone from those glee-club-singing teenagers to the newly slutty Miley Cyrus are all laughing, singing, and teasing their way to the bank. Want to know who else is getting in on this action? Playwright Stephen Karam. His new stage debut, Speech & Debate, centers on three friends a frumpy girl, a nerd, and a gay guy on a high school debate team (which explains the ridiculously boring title). Over the course of the play, they learn how to survive life while wrestling with the complexities of sex, lies, and YouTube videos. Each character has a deep, dark secret, providing the requisite dose of shame in all high school dramas. But fear not Speech & Debate is cliché-free, according to the New York Times.
