Mariah Fox’s dreams must sound like a Rastafarian drum circle or a Jamaican dancehall circa 1978. The esteemed illustrator and artist creates multimedia works inspired by drowsy fantasies and pop culture legends. Jim Morrison, Andy Warhol, and Jean Michel Basquiat all are paid tribute in “i am i,” her multimedia exhibit that opens today. But some of her most powerful artwork pays homage to Bob Marley, a musical icon with which Fox has a close connection. “I’ve worked with his family to keep his legacy alive,” says Fox, who grew up in Jamaica. In addition to collaborating with Marley’s daughter Cedella on children’s books (visit www.tuffgongbooks.com), Fox has created layered images and shadowboxes that incorporate still photographs, acrylic paint, wood, light, and found objects to offer a window into her vision. Discover the internal world of Mariah Fox at her MFA exhibit tonight.
