Miami Beachs North Shore is the new South Beach. And we mean the SoBe that existed before Chris Paciello opened Liquid in 1995 and turned the neighborhood into a throbbing clubland. If youre nostalgic for sleepy, ocean-breeze-kissed streets filled with art deco buildings and leathery-tan seniors, venture 60 blocks up Collins Avenue. The area between 73rd Street to 87th Terrace sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Tatum Waterway was recently deemed the North Shore Historic District for its impressive concentration of mid-20th-century resort architecture. It has all the historical charm of SoBe without any of the untz-untz clamor. The buildings are a unique mix of mid-century modern (think rounded corners, eyebrows, raised medallions) and weather-appropriate Mediterranean (bungalow courts, loggias, and exterior staircases). Nowhere else in the world has this unique MiMo (Miami Modern) architectural style. Celebrate the homegrown aesthetic this weekend at Miami Design Preservation Leagues MiMo on the Beach Walking Tour. The first Saturday of every month, this 90-minute trek shows off MiMo classics such as the Ocean Surf, Days Inn, the Deauville, and Bank of America buildings. It departs from 73rd Street and Collins Avenue.
