VOIDs Website (www.void.tv) describes the band as without a doubt one of the hottest groups in contemporary Australian jazz. Who can disagree? The Necks? Blaine Whittakers Groove Bag? Certainly not Galapagos Duck. Although Australia can boast of the Bee Gees, AC/DC, INXS, Midnight Oil, Nick Cave, and Wolfmother, the land down under lacks jazz pedigree. Into the void comes VOID, with a sound that is equal parts Pat Metheny and Max Roach on methamphetamines.
Saxophonist Troy Roberts leads a drums, bass, and keyboard combination that rarely takes a breath, much less a breather, as it attempts to make a name for itself off of its home island. After winning the 2007 West Australian Music Industry Award for Best Original Jazz Act, VOID headlined the Houston International Jazz Festival and now makes its first full appearance in Miami tonight at Jazid, SoBes go-to hole-in-the-wall for all things live and rhythmic. The show starts at 11:00, but get there early if you want a table. Call 305-673-9372, or visit www.jazid.net.
