Fight to Be Free
Every year the International Rescue Committee assists thousands of people who flee their countries because of war, violence, or racial, ethnic, or religious persecution. Volunteers provide emergency assistance in times of disaster and help refugees settle in the United States. Today is World Refugee Day, and the IRC of Miami and the Miami International University of Art & Design are hosting a fundraising event from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Miami Childrens Museum. In addition to tasty cocktails and hors doeuvres, there will be a silent auction and a special screening of Banker White and Zach Niless award-winning documentary The Refugee All Stars. The film recounts the story of six Sierra Leonean musicians who form a band as they are living as refugees in the Republic of Guinea. (Tomorrow you can see the band perform live at the free Fête de la Musique concert at the Gusman Center.) Tax-deductible tickets cost $35. Call 305-640-9881, ext. 16, or visit www.theirc.org.
