Fight the Gator Raid
University of Miami baseball coach Jim Morris likes to tell a story of when he arrived in Coral Gables 17 years ago: The season hadn't begun, and an assistant coach asked Morris if he had a preference in hotels for the College World Series in Nebraska. Morris said he thought that was a little presumptuous. The response: "We always go." Well, in 2009, UM didn't go; it got knocked out at the regional level by state rival University of Florida. So when the Gators make a rare visit to Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park this Saturday at 7 p.m., it'll be the second game of a three-game set.
There will be plenty of motivation for the Hurricanes, who have missed the College World Series only five times in Morris's 17-year tenure. To say the Canes have something to prove against the Gators is an understatement not only did UF knock UM out of the postseason last year, but also Florida enters this season ranked seventh in Baseball America's preseason Top 25, compared to UM's ranking of 16th.
