Female and Fierce
Hip-hop has become one of the most significant and influential movements in music and dance during the past 30 years. It has changed the way we look, move, and groove. Unfortunately, it has also been mired in misogyny. The groundbreaking Brooklyn group Decadancetheatre is changing that for the better. The all-b-girl company is not some half-assed and half-dressed accessory to a male rapper’s video; it has moved to the front of the stage to rework classic dance pieces and experiment with new forms, while still popping, locking, breaking, and keeping it fierce. The international troupe (dancers hail from Nigeria, Japan, and Norway, to name a few), which won the 2011 Overall Excellence in Dance award at the International Fringe Festival, comes to the Carnival Studio Theater at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
