Feeling Fruity

Fruit lovers, rejoice — it’s summer in South Florida. Now is the season when mangoes, avocados, limes, and other luscious tropical fruits are falling from trees faster than urban foragers can pick them up. And if you can’t get enough, you can bask in all things juicy and sweet at the Redland Summer Fruit Festival. The event will kick off at the Fruit & Spice Park (24801 SW 187th Ave., Homestead), a 40-acre South Florida treasure that grows more than 500 varieties of subtropical fruits, herbs, spices, vegetables, and nuts. The annual fest will showcase locally grown goodness and tropical fruit galore. Think star fruit, lychees, and mangoes. Plus, vendors will offer fruit smoothies, fried cheesecake, tropical fruit ice cream, and other edibles. Add steel drums, a petting zoo, a watermelon-eating contest, and a water balloon toss, and that’s summer-style entertainment (and eats) for days.
