Exploring The Incomprehensible

Columbine. Sandy Hook. Virginia Tech. Once places of relative anonymity, known only as learning locales, they’re now synonymous with tragedies that have become increasingly common in the nation’s schools, unspeakable acts committed by young people plagued by spectres either real or imagined. It’s not an easy subject to absorb, much less witness in a theatrical context, but credit New Theatre’s insightful production of Gideon’s Knot for tackling it with resolve and illumination. Written by prize-winning author Johnna Adams and directed by Ricky J. Martinez, the play offers a taut and visceral examination of how a child with such a disturbed psyche might have escaped notice. During a parent/teacher conference held in the aftermath of one such tragedy, grief and recrimination become a clash of philosophies over freedom of expression and a search for answers that often defy reason and comprehension.
