Don’t Call It a Comeback
The Haitian dance company Ayikodans, much like the country in which it resides, teetered on the verge of disintegration after the devastating 2010 earthquake. With so much aid needed for a crumbled nation, saving one of Haiti’s premier dance companies didn’t seem a priority. But the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) stepped in and held a fundraising series of performances last spring, when Ayikodans simply floored the audiences for three sold-out nights in a row — and financially helped to keep the company afloat. With a superb mixture of unique Haitian folkloric traditions, vodou, contemporary stylings, outstanding choreography, colorful visuals, and live, expert drumming and vocals laced throughout, Ayikodans was hands down one of the highlights of the dance year.
