Did you hear that? “I want some of you.” There it is again. You’re in the Deering Estate’s Richmond Cottage and you’re hearing voices. The gentle cacophony continues: “We’re trapped here” and “Send me. I’ll go.” Thankfully, you’re not alone. You’re on Ghost Tour: Voices From the Past, where the Coconut Grove-based League of Paranormal Investigators plays recordings of disembodied voices captured in August 2010. Through an exhaustive investigation, their aura cameras, pendulums, and recorders caught off-the-charts evidence of paranormal activity at the historic Palmetto Bay estate. The cottage and the Stone House were once home to industry mogul Charles Deering, who died there in 1927. But it’s possible the hauntings stem from even earlier residents of the property: ancient Paleo-Indians. In fact, one of the full-body apparitions the LPI photographed is a man standing by the tree line, dressed in what could be native gear. The other ghostly figure caught on film is a headless woman in a white Victorian-era dress, floating out beyond the boat basin, her arms crossed in disapproval. OK, we just freaked ourselves out.
