Dew the Right Thing

Perhaps confusing high office with an extended benefit concert, Wyclef Jean has decide to run for president of Haiti. But Clef, seriously, the country needs more than your soothing rendition of “No Woman No Cry.” So remember what’s at stake in Haitian politics with a classic piece of Kreyol literature, Gouverneurs de la Rosée (Masters of Dew). Written by the founder of Haiti’s Community Party, Jacques Roumain, the novel calls on farmers to raise their pitchforks for a better life: “We don’t know yet what a force we are… Some day, when we get wise to that… we’ll call a General Assembly of the Masters of the Dew, a great big coumbite of farmers, and we’ll clear out poverty and plant a new life.”

Now adapted for the stage, Masters of the Dew will be performed at the Miami-Dade Auditorium this Sunday. The play, directed by Jan Mapou, owner of Miami’s popular Haitian bookstore Libreri Mapou, will be presented in Kreyol and English with live music by Kiki Wainwright.
