Dancing on the Edge
The Marie Chouinard Dance Company has been exciting international audiences since 1990, but the much-discussed Montreal compagnie has not graced Miami stages with its unique brand of modern dance until now. No, this is not your hippie mothers modern dance troupe, no way, no how.
Visually and conceptually, Chouinard is to dance what industrial and noise were to alternative music. This ensemble is aggressive, tough, fearless, and often controversial in its experimentation; and still, the forms never lose touch with the human body. Even when the dancers rely on prosthetics and other props to extend their bodies beyond the confines of their skin, you remain completely aware of their humanity and, especially, their soul. This weekends performances at the Colony Theatre revolve around two pieces, 24 Preludes by Chopin and Chorale, that exemplify Chouinards signature style. Brief nudity is involved, so leave your inner prude at home.
