For Robert Battle, artistic director designate of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (he takes the reins in July), Miami isnt just another stop on the companys 24-city national tour. Its home. Born in Florida, Battle began studying dance in high school at New World School of the Arts, where he recently spoke at a retirement party for Daniel Lewis, the schools founding dean of dance. Battle returns with the Ailey company for two programs honoring the 50th anniversary of Mr. Aileys masterwork Revelations, which will be presented at Arsht Centers Ziff Ballet Opera House on Thursday at 8 p.m.
Other works include Battles The Hunt and Love Stories, drawing on African-American social dances and exploring notions of past, present, and future. Artistic Director Judith Jamison, hip-hop hero Rennie Harris, and Battle created the three distinct sections to tunes by Stevie Wonder.
