In developing his latest project for the Washington, D.C.-based company Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, choreographer and director Peter DiMuro strives to pierce his audience's consciousness. To do this, DiMuro wants to use the unique stories of the town he's performing in. To customize his ongoing oeuvre Near/Far/In/Out, a cross-generational dance work about gay life, he's staging a two-day workshop for anybody who has something to say. The work will be featured as part of the 25th Annual Florida Dance Festival, taking place June 15-29. In order to get a local flavor, DiMuro and three other dancers from the company will lead volunteers in movement and storytelling exercises. Do not fret if you've never performed before an audience; the troupe is looking for authentic voices to reflect the gay experience in Miami, from teens to seniors. Those who are chosen to perform the piece at the festival will be asked to commit to an intensive rehearsal schedule during the last two weeks of June. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
The workshop takes place at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, and 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at The New World School of the Arts, 25 NE 2nd St, Room 5709. Admission is free. Call 305-867-7111.

Guitarist Juuso Nieminem is hot
Great classical guitarists don't come exclusively from Spain. Finland produces plenty of them too. Take Juuso Nieminem, for instance. He can't be too bad at what he does. The young virtuoso won the prestigious International Guitar Competition in Coria, Portugal, last summer. Guess beginning those guitar lessons at age nine has its advantages. Nieminem plays as part of the International Masters Series presented by the Miami Classical Guitar Society at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at Miami-Dade Community College Wolfson Campus (300 NE Second Ave, auditorium). Tickets cost $15. He'll also pluck the strings at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Centro Cultural Español (800 Douglas Rd., Coral Gables). Tickets cost $5. Call 305-412-2494. -- By Nina Korman
