Dance City, USA
In a world gone mad with celebrity-chasing, there is no need to hide in your closet to escape. The Miami City Ballet and the Florida International University dance department are offering respite from the Britney/Paris/Anna Nicole madness with a needed dose of class and culture.
The 1936 ballet Lilac Garden is a juicy number. The prima ballerina is marrying, er, settling, for her groom. Wedding guests include the man she truly loves, and a mystery woman who turns out to be (insert dramatic music here) her fiancé's mistress. Intrigued? The Miami City Ballet offers the psychological pirouetting during its Program III,. This high-class soap opera opens tonight at the Carnival Center.
Starting tonight at 8:30 p.m., the Florida International University dance department will present Different Voices Different Movements. The evening of original choreography will pay homage to the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomble, feature traditional Haitian dances, and include multimedia performances. It opens tonight at 8:30 at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at the University Park Campus, 11200 SW Eighth St., Miami. Tickets range from $8 to $15. Call 305-348-3789.
