Dance Around Abilities

In these modern times, it’s amazing to think about how many of today's “normal” things seemed improbable way back in the 20th Century. There’s a black family in the White House; military members can both “ask” and “tell”; and mixed-ability dance performances are no longer strange concepts, but almost commonplace. For instance, Tigertail Productions, the Florida Dance Association, and Inkub8 have teamed up to present “danceable” for its 14th year in Miami, this time featuring filmmaker and choreographer Victoria Marks and Inkub8’s Heather Maloney. Dancers with and without physical disabilities will perform on Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., while Maloney will debut her latest dance, “unquiet/body.” Marks, a dance professor at UCLA and a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow, will kick off the multi-day event with an interactive workshop, “Action Conversation,” on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Her films, which deal with general political themes along with the tension between depictions of virtuosity and imperfections and disabilities, will be screened throughout.
Fri., Feb. 1, 8:30 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 2, 8:30 p.m., 2013
