Come Into the Garden

Pop Art’s power and nature’s outlandish palette collide during Lichtenstein at Fairchild, which features 10 of the iconic artist’s monumental sculptures in a lush tropical setting. Today at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, it’s Poppin’ Tropical Nights, where Roy Lichtenstein’s works, blazing with shocking primary colors, combine with vibrant succulents, exotic flowers, and flocks of jewel-like butterflies in a luminous environment.

“This year the gardens will look astonishing as we fill the landscape with … a spectacular combination of tropical flowers and world class art,” says Fairchild executive director Mike Maunder. It’s the largest sculptural exhibition of the artist’s work in a naturalistic setting and will include Lichtenstein favorites, House II and the totemic Art Deco Modern Head, soaring more than 30 feet high. Lichtenstein is best known for art inspired by newspaper ads and comic strips of the Sixties. The exhibit will run through May 31, 2008, with Poppin’ Tropical Nights taking place each Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for adults.
