One would imagine that the Latino-themed Maya Indie Film Series bases its name on the Mesoamerican civilization revered for its awesome art, mad math skills, mind-blowing pyramids, and complex astronomical systems. Or maybe its rooted in the Sanskrit word maya, which describes the human tendency to accept illusions as reality. After all, the best flicks are those that bring us to tears, scare us to death, or make us piss our pants with laughter, even though we know its all make-believe.
Expect such visceral reactions at this weeklong sampling of six Latino indie flicks. The film selections range from Trópico de Sangre a Dominican historical biopic starring Michelle Rodriguez to Backyard, a Mexican thriller about the Juárez femicides starring Jimmy Smits. The Maya Indie Film Series runs this Friday through August 26 at Regal Palace 18, with five screenings each day beginning at 12:10 p.m.
