Celebrate Darwin's 200th Birthday
Sometimes the back-and-forth debate about evolution glosses over the most important aspect of Charles Darwin's theory, namely, all the amazing scientific research he did in the process of formulating it. To celebrate some of those achievements, the University of Miami's Department of Biology is marking the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth with a free lecture titled "Disentangling One of Darwin's Great Mysteries: The Story of Climbing Plants".
The lecture will be given by Lucia Lohmann of the Universidade de São Paolo, Brazil, and will be preceded by a guided tour of the UM arboretum at 6 p.m. and followed by a birthday cake and champagne reception at 8:30. As for evolution itself, we remain neutral, but the combination of cake and champagne sure looks to us like evidence of human progress.
