Call It a Comeback
In the days before Art Basel and Second Saturdays, Wynwood was just a collection of forgotten streets north of downtown. Although off the national radar, it was the stomping ground for a local band of underground, consciously lowbrow artists. Chief among them was Dustin Orlando, the owner/curator of the pioneering Objex Artspace at 36th Street and Second Avenue. In 2005, police shut down the gallery and Orlando abruptly skipped town, leaving us here at New Times to speculate on the possible nefarious reasons for his hasty departure.
Orlando is back with his first show in Miami in five years. Hes brought together urban, contemporary, pop surrealist, mixed media, and street artists for the group show Believe the Hype at Eazy Street Gallery. Expect plenty of spray paint and silkscreen on 2-D and 3-D art. Keep an eye out for Nick Gazins twisted, comics-influenced pieces, which have been garnering fame on posters, flyers, T-shirts, album covers, and in the pages of Vice.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: April 19. Continues through May 29, 2010
