Have you always thought the opera just wasn’t your thing? When you think opera, do you imagine that cartoon where Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd sing Wagner? It’s time to check your preconceived notions at the door and hightail it to the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach), fancy binoculars in hand, for Miami Lyric Opera’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Perhaps you’ve read the original novel or seen David Cronenberg’s film adaptation late one night on HBO2. Well, the Lyric Opera has the beautiful voice of Brazilian soprano Daniella Carvalho, and that alone bests any book or movie, hands down. Don’t worry if you aren’t fluent in Italian and think you won’t be able to keep up with the plot; there will be projected subtitles in English to help you follow the story. We suggest, however, not to get too caught up in trying to read the lyrics. Just immerse yourself in the sonic beauty the way Puccini intended.
