Brutal Business

There’s a cliché that all boxers die tragic, penniless deaths. And for too long, the examples have been numerous enough to make it unsettlingly true: The IRS hounded Joe Louis into the grave, Sonny Liston OD’ed in a Vegas hotel room, and bankrupt ex-champs such as Leon Spinks, Mike Tyson, and Riddick Bowe might soon be added to the long, sad list of boxing’s casualties. These days, though, certain fighters seem to have figured out that the path to long-term prosperity isn’t a life of prizefighting, but promotion. Over the past decade, Oscar De La Hoya’s company Golden Boy has established itself as the ultimate prototype for brawlers-turned-businessmen. And now, like many others, 28-year-old Cuban-born prizefighter and current WBA featherweight titleholder Yuriorkis “El Ciclon” Gamboa (16-0) is looking to be the next De La Hoya. Be there this Friday at the Miami Beach Convention Center when Gamboa Promotions and the Mixed Fighting Alliance present the New Generation, a fight night featuring both boxing and MMA. There will be ten contests in all, including a bout between Gamboa’s younger brother Yoelvis and Jamar Saunders.
