Born To Win

Simón Bolívar was a stone-cold killer. And we mean that in the best way possible. As a military leader of the Venezuelan independence movement, his “Decree of War to the Death” called for the extermination of Spanish colonial rule by any means necessary. Venezuela rose up, stood tall, and said, “We’re not gonna take it anymore.” They fought with bomb and gun, horse and knife, strength and stamina, until the evils and vicissitudes of their oppressor’s hate lay in waste at their feet. The only thing sweeter than the taste of victory is an arepa with shredded chicken, rice and beans, cheese, and plantains. Grab one and celebrate at the Venezuelan Independence Festival this Sunday at Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens). Music by Gilberto Santa Rosa, Reynaldo Armas, Caramelos de Cianuro, and others will have you going wild from noon until 11 p.m. And special sets of música llanera will take the party to the campo. So grab an ice-cold Polar and celebrate. Freedom never tasted so good. Tickets cost $20; kids 12 and younger get in free. Visit or call 786-271-1242.
