Books on Bikes

South Florida might seem like a less than literary region (other than our fondness for Dexter tomes, of course), but believe it or not, the City Beautiful offers an impressive array of bookish benchmarks. This week, you can join noted author and erudite ally Mitchell Kaplan of Books & Books on Bike Tour — Literally!, a tour-by-bike of Coral Gables’ literary landmarks. You’ll cruise by the old University of Miami site, once the lecturing digs of Robert Frost and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and then drop into modern-day UM, where you’ll get a VIP look at the university’s special collection. Plus, historical author Arva Moore Parks will recite poetry by Gables founder George Merrick at the site of his childhood home. Expect some surprises too. Bring water, a working bike, and a curious mind. The standard speed runs about 10 mph. The tour kicks off at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Coral Gables Museum (285 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables). It costs $10 for adults and $5 for museum members and children under 12 (recommended for ages 10 an older). To RSVP, call 305-603-8067 or visit booksandbooks.com.
