Big Girls Need Love Too
Some men might believe that the closer to the bone, the sweeter the meat, but most Cuban males will swear differently -- as will Laura Luna. The Cuban artist creates sculptures and paintings of bald and nude Amazon women who appear as invulnerable as they do voluptuous. Tierra Firme, her provocative show at Casa Bacardi, features fifteen works on paper and five bronze sculptures depicting powerful female figures. The pieces contain autobiographical references to Lunas quest for spiritual sustenance.
She definitely doesnt go for the Paris Hilton look, curator Eugene Pons says with a chuckle. Laura Luna captures the essence of the typical Cuban womans full figure, but her work embodies a sense of feminine inner strength that transcends all cultures, he says. Pons mentions that one of Lunas head-turning bronzes, featuring an elongated nude torso, is certain to leave spectators a slavering wreck. Her style is unique, the figures thickly muscled and almost Botero-like. A visit reveals that Lunas women control their own pleasure as well. On exhibit through October 25. Mondays-Fridays. Starts: Sept. 20. Continues through Oct. 25
