The 13th-ranked University of Miami Women’s Basketball squad came into this season knowing it had to compete with the big girls if it was going to make a serious run at the NCAA tourney. Though they crushed unranked teams such as Holy Cross, the ladies fell to ranked opponents such as Tennessee and North Carolina. But thanks to their winning streak at home and the sharp-shooting awesomeness of Requina “Bay-Bay” Williams, the Lady Canes were able to topple fifth-ranked Maryland last week. Williams went bananas on the Terrapin defense, dropping 34 points and going eight for 14 from the three-point line as the team held court at home for the big 75-63 victory. However, it wasn’t all Bay-Bay going lights out on Maryland that earned the U the win. UM’s defense held the nation’s highest-scoring offense to its lowest margin to date. A stifling defense combined with Williams’s .355 percent shooting from beyond the arc is bad news for anyone who wants to keep Miami from its ultimate goal. The ladies will look to keep things rolling when they host unranked ACC rivals Clemson Tigers.
