The founders of the Miami Short Film Festival (MsFF) have a great idea for combating the overprescription of attention-deficit drugs. Instead of making attention spans longer, just make movies shorter! Though this ingenious solution to one of America’s pill-popping problems hasn’t taken off, the festival has somehow survived and thrived. The tenth annual MsFF has selected 70 films (from about 800 international submissions) for screenings at the historic Colony Theatre, beginning at 7:30 each night from Monday through November 18. Highlights include American director Luke Matheny’s God of Love, which will screen Monday, the first night of the festival. The night’s theme will be “The Glorious Crew,” chosen for the highly decorated films showcased. Winner of last year’s Academy Award for Best Short Film, God of Love is the story of a lounge-singing darts player who receives a batch of love-inducing darts in response to his prayers for love. The films shown each subsequent night are also grouped by theme, which include “Our Secret Lives,” “The Latin Files,” “Moments of Insanity,” and “Heroes.” The awards ceremony will take place November 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Colony Theatre.
