Artistic Cheat Sheet
Think of the new Miami Art Museum exhibit, New Work Miami 2010, as CliffsNotes to the local contemporary art scene. Curator René Morales calls it a complex show that represents a complex art community, but if pressed to summarize, he says a lot of the pieces deal with urban development and that Miami art has a ruckus energy stemming from rock n roll and sci-fi tropes.
Among the 35 Miami artists, Beatriz Monteavaro employs classic punk rock and campy horror movie imagery in her sculptures. Kevin Arrow uses photo light boxes and a vintage slide projector to showcase discarded vacation images from Miami garage sales. Don Lambert shows a spinning disc sculpture inspired by Edwin Abbotts sci-fi novella, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions.
New Work runs through October 17, but this Saturday, the exhibits opening night will feature performances by the TM Sisters, music by Oscar Fuentes and the Gipsy Catz, and a makeshift radio broadcasting studio by the artist collective Talking Head Transmitters.
