And Don't Call Me Shirley
A movie night with a few drinks doesn’t always have to be as expensive as CineBistro and other upscale dine-in theaters. Besides, if you’d prefer to enjoy your film with a side of irony, mainstream cineplexes’ selections usually aren’t much fun. Instead, for those looking to get their fill with a shot and a flick, be it a cult classics or a glorious milestone of bad film, there’s Shirley’s (176 NW 24th St., Miami). Located in the back of the wonderful bar Gramps, Shirley’s is a screening room that shows films every Tuesday and Wednesday night. This Wednesday at 8 p.m., Shirley’s has a special treat. Long before resident Spielberg director of photography Janusz Kaminski snagged two Academy Awards for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, he made a gloriously awful movie that goes by the name Cool as Ice. What’s cooler than ice, you ask? Vanilla Ice. Yep, Vanilla Ice is the star of this rap musical that you can watch at a bar stocked with copious amounts of alcohol. Plus, one free drink comes with the regular ticket price of $8. Not only was Cool as Ice nominated for a billion Razzies, including Worst Picture, but it’s also one of the most shamelessly ’90s flicks ever.
