After nearly five years on hiatus, Venezuelan dealer Genaro Ambrosino has returned to the Miami arts scene. Ambrosino, who was one of a select few locals to make the cut during early editions of Art Basel Miami Beach, collaborated with Lissette Garcia, a local art advisor and independent curator, to open new gallery General Audience Presents (769 NE 125th St., North Miami) near the Museum of Contemporary Art.
General Audience Presents joins indie spaces Bridge Red Studios/Project Space and Under the Bridge in a neighborhood that’s becoming noted for its alt-art vibe.
Rather than focus on the commercial, Ambrosino’s new project space plans to traffic in “thoughtfully curated exhibits that encourage a discourse between emerging and midcareer artists and the local arts community,” he says.
Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., “Architectural Archetypes,” GAP’s inaugural exhibit, will feature work by multidisciplinary New York-based artist Derrick Adams, whose show also marks his South Florida solo debut. A continuation of Adams’s Deconstruction Worker series, offerings include mixed-media sculpture and works on paper in which the artist creates minimal geometric constructions of angular human figures. Adams, whose practice is rooted in deconstructivist philosophies, explores through his works the fragmented nature of pop culture and its influence on perception.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Sept. 27. Continues through Nov. 10, 2012
